My mom was the kind of mom you could count on when you were hurt or sick, but also
the one whom you were terrified to hear shout your name out the back door. It’s
universal that when ‘momma’ shouted your first, middle, and last name at the top of her
lungs, you were in a heap of trouble. My momma was a great model for motherhood in
my life. She was always one I could trust to lend me her ear. I felt heard, seen, and
understood. Empathy was her strength, and her kindness was tremendously powerful to
soothe my childhood rage.
The Impact of a Faithful Mom
My mom was always an especially faithful woman. Every day you would see her Bible
open on the dining room table. All throughout the day I would see her return to it in
between doing her “mom tasks” that she did so well.
Before school, she would have us sit at the table and she would read a devotion and
pray for us before we ran out the door. I would not have ever anticipated the kind of
impact that would have on us kids, but when I think back on that now, it’s a special
memory that makes me elated to know that my mother was genuinely concerned for our
souls.
A biblical example of faithful mothers are Timothy’s mother and grandmother. 2 Timothy
1:5 says, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother
Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” The
faithfulness of Timothy’s mother and grandmother was contagious, and Timothy caught
it. Timothy grew up to be a young pastor of a church in the first century, which was
simply the fruit of two generations of mothers’ faithfulness. What a generational impact!
Moms, from the perspective of an adult man reflecting on his past, know that your work
does not go unnoticed by your children. I can recall small moments, even now, from my
childhood that have left a lasting impact on my adult self. Mom, your labors of love are
not in vain, they are simple seeds sowed in a little human that will blossom and grow up
into the kind of person you desire for them to become.
Here’s to you, Mom!
Overall, moms should be celebrated and cherished! They should be honored for the
blood, sweat, and tears that go into nurturing and raising children. You are doing important work in bringing up a new generation; a generation that hopefully yields fruits
of the spirit and impacts our world for the sake of God’s kingdom. Whether you are a
work-at-home mom, a work-in-the-world mom, or if you are a mother-figure for other
children, know that your labor is not in vain. We see you and love you and we
appreciate you more than words can say. So, here’s to you, Mom!
